Coyote was walking to a hole on the golf course, feeling kind of hungry. He was thinking to himself how tasty a rodent would be and licked his lips. When he saw one he thought “this is my lucky day”. So he chased him down.
He was breathing heavily and about to eat him, when the rodent said in his tiny, high pitched voice: “Wait Coyote. Maybe we can work together.” Now this intrigued Coyote, so he asked him: “what can you, a little rodent, do for me?”. The rodent replied “our clan likes to tear things apart to make our nests. We don’t care what we tear apart, so we end up breaking lots of things. We also spread diseases. Maybe this would fun for you, and we could help you create good mischief too.”
Coyote thought about it and realized that it would be good mischief. And better still, he would have an endless supply of rodents to eat if he could trick the rodents.
Now the rodents are admirable in some ways. They are industrious and work hard. However, they have trouble seeing the big view of things because they are so close to the ground.
Coyote was hungry, so he ate the rodent. But later he ran into several others and started singing this song:
Get along little rodents, it’s time to go home
Other animals will eat you, then you’ll be gone
Trust me to protect you, or else you’ll be done
Get along little rodents, it’s time to go home
The song scared the rodents so they agreed to let Coyote into the Rodent Clan, believing he had a lot of stature and would protect them. They also figured there were enough of them to keep him under control, if things got out of hand, but as we know now, they were wrong. Later he became their leader, but that’s another story.
